South African gold miner Harmony Gold has reported two fatalities at its Tshepong mine in Welkom in the Free State Province.
According to the statement released by the company, the incident occurred on 10 October following a fall of ground at the mine site.
As a result, operations at the gold mine have since been suspended pending an investigation on the cause of the incident.
In the statement, Harmony Gold Mining Company CEO Peter Steenkamp said: “The executives and management express their sincerest condolences go to our colleagues’ family, friends and colleagues.
“We believe that our proactive safety culture that has been reinforced through various initiatives is the responsibility of each and every one of our stakeholders at Harmony.
“We must all continue making every effort to ensure a safe working place and that we reach our goal of zero harm across all our operations.”
