Kalenborn´s wear protection combination has enabled one of the world’s biggest iron ore producers to eliminate unscheduled repairs and extend service life of an iron ore treatment facility. Kalenborn lined the floor of the channels with smooth, wear-resistant ABRESIST fused cast basalt moulded elements. Wear-resistant KALCRET ANX hardening compound was selected to protect the less exposed walls.
Sound preventative maintenance of equipment in iron ore preparation could be the difference between profit and loss in an iron mining project. And so, it is essential for maintenance to be carried out on components as scheduled, consistently.
Routine repairs for an iron producer
A few months ago Kalenborn, the world renowned German manufacturer of wear protection products, was engaged by one of the biggest iron ore producers in the world to do routine repairs on channels which transport contaminated surface water to collection basin.
One of the engineers involved the project explains that the repairs are central to efficient iron ore production, and this project was no exception. “Routine repairs are critical, as in the preparation of iron ore, contaminated surface water travels at high velocity through channels to collection basins. The sharp-edged iron ore is highly abrasive to the concrete surfaces there. Frequent repairs are required as a result.”
The installation process
Kalenborn lined the floor of the channels with smooth, wear-resistant ABRESIST fused cast basalt moulded elements. Wear-resistant KALCRET ANX hardening compound was selected to protect the less exposed walls. The combination lining has significantly extended service life and eliminated unscheduled repairs, which has resulted in increased productivity.
With the new trowelable KALCRET ANX, the installation crew was able to apply seamless linings to the profiled walls of these corrugated steel pipes in an extremely short period of time. KALCRET ANX is based on inorganic materials, whereby basalt serves as one of the solids.
In combination with the smooth plates made of ABRESIST cast basalt in the pipe floor, a customer-specific and application-specific solution was developed for this special problem.
A satisfied customer, continuous relationship
So far, the installed lining is performing optimally, and contented, the client has placed orders with Kalenborn for additional channel repairs.
