Zimbabwe, which has been been experiencing black outs due to limited power supply, has unveiled plans to develop nuclear power generation plants in order to meet the short fall in power supply.
This follows the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Republic of Zimbabwe and the Russian Federation State Economic Corporation, Zimbabwe government-owned newspaper, The Herald Reported.
Nuclear is not a popular alternative amongst options when African countries are seeking alternative power sources to diversifying their energy supply mix. Mostly countries have been exploring solar, wind and gas, which are flaunted as ‘cheaper’ and ‘greener’ options.
Recently, Rwanda also signed a similar agreement with Rosatam.
African countries have been facing a power supply crisis, mainly due to factors such as to ageing equipment, drought and rising demand.
