In a tough economy, funds are not always available to make large capital equipment expenditures forcing operations to make use of existing equipment, sometimes 20 years or older. The challenge with using old dust collectors lies in keeping up with today’s increased performance standards while adhering to current air quality requirements and regulations. Dust collected using older baghouses may also be so abrasive that the non-woven filter media being used develops holes at the bottom of the filter bags, leading to very short filter life. Donaldson pleated bags are now providing cost effective solutions for most common issues affecting baghouse dust collectors today.

These problem-solving bags are available in a variety of filter media including Donaldson’s proprietary Ultra-Web® nanofiber technology on a spunbond (SB) substrate – the only of its kind in the industry.
Donaldson offers its nanofiber technology on all popular makes and models of baghouse collectors. The Ultra-Web SB media used in the pleated bag program consists of a layer of nanofibers (most of which are only 0.3 microns in diameter) over a sturdy spunbond polyester substrate. The substrate is known to work well in applications where agglomerative dust is problematic.

In the case of abrasive dust, pleated bag filters are much more durable and have a lower chance of abrading than a felt bag. Donaldson’s pleated bags have more media, so the dust collector can run at a lower air-to-cloth ratio, which exposes each square foot of filtration media to less dust and extends filter life.
With the combination of Ultra-Web fine fibre media and sturdy spun-bond polyester substrate, the technology traps dust on the surface media, for up to three times the filter life of 16-ounce polyester felt bags. This results in reduced maintenance and downtime costs as well as cleaner air, with a greater filtration efficiency that captures submicron dust particles (0.3 micron and larger).
Donaldson’s high-performance pleated bag filters are designed to fit all popular brands of bag collectors. For the grain handling, mining, woodworking, and other industries with large volumes of abrasive dust, Donaldson also offers snap-in pleated bag filter options for Torit® RF Baghouse and Modular Baghouse dust collectors. This option provides tool-free filter installation. Combined with the sturdy pleated filters, snap-in installation can reduce labour and downtime costs by up to 50% compared with standard felt bags and cages.
Using pleated bags right from the start can prevent problems and quickly save money. Furthermore, purchasing pleated bag filters in a new RF dust collector may require fewer filters – another potential savings for the operation.
