Manufactured by ELDAN Recycling S/A  in Denmark, The ELDAN Heavy Duty Super Chopper (SC-HD) mining tyre recycling system can process mining tyres of typically 3 to 4 meter in diameter and weight 4 to 6 tons per tyre, at a capacity of approximately 4-6 ton per production hour. This is suitable for new companies and start-ups looking at investing in tyre recycling and shredding.

Just like other African countries, the biggest challenge South Africa is facing is turning a huge tyre waste problem into a cost beneficial business. Highlighting  the magnitude of the challenge, in an article (What happens to used tyres in SA?), The 2019 Business Day Edition reported: “In SA, it is estimated that 11-million waste tyres are lying in dumps, as stockpiles or simply scattered across residential, industrial and rural areas. Thousands of tons more are added to that dangerous level every year.”

Furthermore, the publication reported that only 10% of overall waste generated in SA is recycled, of which 2% is processed in waste-to-energy programmes. The remainder ends up in landfill sites.

Mainly, this situation is due to lack of access or sufficient knowledge about reliable machinery that can be used to process mining truck tyres due to their size and weight. Keenly, ELDAN Recycling A/S, a leading producer of machinery and recycling plants that can turn huge tyres into rubber granulate and powder, tells African Mining Brief that it is well-resourced to help industry manage this situation. The company is confident of replicating the success of its products worldwide in Africa.

Bjørn Laursen, ELDAN Recycling’s Product Manager for tyre recycling, is eager to share his company’s know-how with organisations exploring vast investment opportunities in tyre recycling business in mining and allied industries. Laursen has over 30 years’ experience within the industry and is also the son of the founder and former owner of ELDAN Recycling A/S in Denmark.  ELDAN Recycling not only provides different tyre and shredding solutions for the mining industry, but also for general car and truck tyres and similar.

Complete solution

Laursen explains that ELDAN is aware that what clients need is a complete solution to their problem not just a machine or a recycling plant. “The scope of our solution includes everything that is needed for starting up a tyre recycling plant for the processing of mining, truck, bus, tractor-and car tyres into high quality rubber granulate.”

ELDAN Recycling is able to use vast knowledge gathered from over half a century to help new companies and start-ups make informed investment decisions in machinery and avoid costly mistakes that often ruin a business. In 2011, ELDAN Recycling demonstrated this ability when it helped a client find a solution for the complex problem of recycling mining tyres, recounts Laursen. “We were contacted by a new customer, who had been searching for a solution to process mining tyres for a long time.

By combining our tough equipment and our long-proven technology, we presented a solution to the customer on which we did a very successful test run in the autumn of 2011.” After a successful installation that was tailor-made to the needs of the customer, the happy customer then continued to recycle thousands of bulky mining tyres.

The ELDAN Heavy Duty Super Chopper

ELDAN supplied the ELDAN Heavy Duty Super Chopper (SC-HD) mining tyre recycling system supplied to the client. The ELDAN Heavy Duty Super Chopper (SC-HD) mining tyre recycling system can process mining tyres of typically 3 to 4 meter in diameter and weight 4 to 6 tons per tyre, at a capacity of approximately 4-6 ton per production hour.

Since the mining tyre recycling system is combined with the standard ELDAN tyre recycling systems, the output can be decided according to the customer’s specific needs of output granulate size and quality.

Laursen shows how the machine works: “The mining tyres are first handled and pre-cut by a heavy-duty demolition shear into pieces which fit the in-feed of the ELDAN Heavy Duty Super Chopper (SC-HD). This machine is especially designed to process voluminous and tough waste. In the Heavy-Duty Super Chopper, the big pieces of mining tyre are processed into tyre shreds, and free steel wire is liberated and removed from the shreds by a powerful Overband Magnet.

The tyre shreds are further processed in the ELDAN granulation and separation plant. Depending on your specific requirements a high-quality rubber granulate, and clean steel wire can be produced.”

Unlike conventional equipment, the Heavy-Duty Super Chopper can be used for pre-chopping of most materials e.g. tyres without prior de-beading, cables and electronic and electrical waste, refrigerators, aluminium, municipal solid waste (i.e. MSW), wind turbine wings (cut-off), plastics and industrial waste.

Worth mentioning, apart from the traditional hydraulic version, the ELDAN Super Chopper is now available in frequency drive. Launched during the first quarter of 2018, the new ELDAN Super Chopper Frequency Drive has the strength, capacity and the function as the hydraulic version, but will also reduce the power consumed tremendously. The start-up power is less than 10% of nominal KW, and the average power consumption is reduced by up to 50-60 %.

Guaranteed plant capacity, production and quality

ELDAN Recycling offer customers a written guarantee for in plant capacity, for the plant production and for the output quality.  This ensures that the plant fulfils the promised features that would secure a profitable recycling solution. “Expensive down-time is a nightmare for every recycling business owner, and by choosing ELDAN equipment this type of problem is minimised due to robust quality machinery, technical know-how and customer service, as well as a reliable after sales department with accessible spare parts. ELDAN still have spare parts and old manuals on all their machines kept in storage in several languages,” Laursen assures.

ELDAN machines and entire plants are manufactured in accordance with strict regulations and procedures in-house at ELDAN’s manufacturing plant in Denmark.

Product selection

ELDAN endeavours to help clients make informed decisions in product procurement at all times.  This is based on the belief that an investment in a new recycling plant means a considerable amount of money, and it is important to receive a considerable ROI (Return On Investment) for the investment to become sustainable. “As a potential new comer to the recycling business, there are some other key aspects to take into consideration. Apart from your budget, your needs and expectations as well as the ROI, it is important to take the time aspect and duration of your investment into consideration. It is important to make sure that there are spare parts for a specific machine as well as a manual in your language, even in 10-20 years’ time when you might need it!” Laursen highlights.

ELDAN Recycling A/S helps customers meet their expectations by sharing support and know-how, as well as the importance of tailor fitting the tyre recycling plant, exactly to the building and needs of the customer.

“We especially dedicate a team for each project. As a customer, you can expect to receive a recycling plant that will be designed exactly to your building and logistic requirements.  A project manager will visit you as soon as we start up the project, and help you prepare your own project people, and teach them how to incorporate our solution into your building. Our team will be with you from day one until you can run the plant yourself!” Laursen says, underlining the importance of following instructions and manuals to achieve optimal performance of machines.
