A court in Harare is charging Anesu Dhliwayo (34), a diamond sorter at Marange-based Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC), for theft of diamonds, which took place between 1st of January and 21st December 2017, according to a report published in Zimbabwe’s newspaper, The Herald.
In an elaborate scheme, collaborating with three fellow employees, Anesu stole diamonds worth and replaced them with fake gems and low quality diamonds to avoid detection. His accomplices included a diamond sorter, closed circuit television operator, and an intern security guard.
Exhibiting evidence in court, Harare magistrate, Ms Rumbidzai Mugwagwa, said the diamonds were sold for worth half a million US dollars. Anesu used his share of the proceeds from to buy a Toyota Wish.
Anesu’s bail application has been denied and remanded in custody to January 12.
