Platinum Group Metals’ (PTM) Western Bushveld Joint Venture (WBJV) Project 1 Platinum Mine is located on the western limb of the Bushveld Complex approximately 35 km north west of the of Rustenburg.
The development is set to be in full production in the Q4 of 2015 and , after a planned two-year ramp-up period, steady-state production is scheduled at 275 000 oz of platinum, palladium, rhodium and gold per year.
Proven and probable reserves are estimated at 4, 7 Moz 4E, sufficient to support a mine life in excess of 20 years.
In 2014, saw the company completing a number of major structures such as the foundations and civil works for the primary mill, as well as the pollution control dams, including the electrical substation and connections for the North and South mines. Power infrastructure remained on track, with an initial 10 MVA installation completed, and an additional 10 MVA service scheduled for completion at the end 2015.
In addition, the stands and civil works for the conveyor from the North Mine to the mills had been completed, while the exterior of the North mine change house, which could accommodate 1200 people, was complete, and the interior currently in progress.
According to PTM, with an 82.9% shares in the project, as of November 2014 approximately US$343 million had been invested into the project, with the peak funding requirement currently projected at US$502 million. Its current cash position should be be enough to complete the mine to initial production.
FOURTEEN FANS, FIVE FAN STATIONS AT MASEVE
Following the successful commissioning of two surface main fan stations delivered on a turnkey basis at the end of 2013 to Platinum Group Metals’ (PTM) Maseve project, BBE Projects is well advanced with subsequent orders for an additional two fan stations and fans for a temporary ventilation cap.
The second order is identical to the first, calling for one bifurcated and one trifurcated main fan station, incorporating two and three 325 kW axial flow fans respectively. As with the first order, the scope includes all civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering design and specifications, all steel ducting, buildings, fan mechanicals, electric drives, instrumentation and control systems. The scope also includes the construction of the raisebore ventilation shaft collars and application of ground stabilisation around each collar, which entailed grouting and spyling to a depth of around 25 m. The third order is for a ‘top-hat cap with four 75 kW auxiliary mine fans to provide ventilation for early development of one of the declines.
In collaboration with DRA, the primary EPCM contractor for the mine’s surface development, BBE Projects has planned the construction of the surface main fan stations in such a way that several tasks are executed simultaneously, ensuring the best possible delivery date. Furthermore, the site layout has been carefully arranged such that the construction of the fan stations takes place alongside the raise-boring activities, leaving only the shaft-top bend to be installed once the raise-borer is removed. The fans are running the next day.
Environmental issues needing particular attention on these projects include mitigating the impact of noise and dust on the local farming community. Power during construction is being provided by on-site generators.
