Dowding, Reynard & Associates, the multinational organisation that provides customized, economically-efficient engineering services to mining houses, recently recommended Kaytech’s Tensar TriAx, a revolutionary geogrid, to solve an in situ soil problem at the Tweefontein Mining Complex in the Mpumalanga Highveld area.
Owned exclusively by Xstrata Coal South Africa, the Tweefontein Complex, situated 110km north east of Johannesburg, is divided into three mines – the Boschmans, Waterpan and Witcons Collieries, which have been structured into open pit, underground and surface operations, respectively.
When contractor, WBHO Construction experienced difficulties obtaining satisfactory soil compaction underneath the 300 and 600 metre long stacker/tunnel platforms at these mines, Kaytech’s Tensar TriAx TX 160came to the rescue. A revolution in geogrid technology, the triangular grid aperture of Tensar TriAx, is the culmination of research and testing that proved that this design functionally outperforms the best biaxial geogrids. Coupled with an increase in rib thickness and junction efficiency, Tensar TriAx provides greatly improved aggregate confinement and interaction, resulting in improved structural performance of the mechanically stabilised layer.
Whereas conventional solutions, including over excavation, additional concrete and deep foundations are expensive, labour intensive and sometimes environmentally unsound, Tensar TriAx created stiffened platforms that efficiently distribute loads over underlying soils thereby increasing their effective load-bearing capacity and decreasing differential settlement.
By the end of the project in August 2013, 70 000m2 of Tensar TriAx TX 160 had been installed. Due to construction schedules being reduced as well as reductions in undercutting and backfilling, the use of this innovative Kaytech product at the Tweefontein Complex saved millions of rands. Besides its cost-effectiveness, Tensar TriAx also improved the margin of safety against unforeseen soil conditions.
Dowding, Reynard & Associates, who describe their company as a “total solutions provider” and whose services include feasibility studies, design engineering, project management and operations, were confident that Tensar TriAx was the best product for this project, another feather in the cap for Kaytech.
